What Indoor Chore Do Men Really Claim As Their Own
If you ever wondered who really “owns” certain chores at home, this week’s conversation on The Bobby Bones Show was pretty eye-opening.
Amy brought a question to the show from the Journal of Family Psychology. The study looked at 30 different household tasks and asked: What is the one chore that men fully own — both the planning and the doing?
Right away, the guys started guessing.
Yard work came up first, but Amy quickly shut that down. The study was only about indoor household tasks. So mowing the lawn didn’t count.
Bobby guessed taking out the trash. He said that’s his job at home, even though he sometimes needs a reminder and occasionally forgets to put a new liner in the can. Amy pushed back a little, asking if it really counts as “full ownership” if someone has to remind you.
Eddie guessed locking up the house at night — checking the doors and turning off lights. He said he fully handles that at his house, mostly because he gets anxious about safety. His wife even notices when he’s not home to do the nightly check.
Lunchbox, being Lunchbox, said controlling the TV remote. He claimed he always chooses what’s on.
In the end, Amy revealed the correct answer: taking out the trash. According to the study, that’s the one task men most often fully handle. The point wasn’t that partners don’t care about other chores, but that the “mental load” of planning and remembering usually falls more on one person.
The conversation then turned to the worst chore. Bobby said folding laundry is the worst, especially mismatched socks. He’d rather clean a toilet. Eddie picked dishes. Amy said scrubbing toilets and showers tops her list.
