The Bobby Bones Show talked about the dating term “Shreking,” described as choosing to date someone perceived as being below one’s usual standards. The idea was explained using the characters Shrek and Princess Fiona, with the comparison suggesting that dating a “Shrek” can feel safer because the partner may treat you better, be less likely to leave, and allow the other person to feel more in control of the relationship.

Then it shifted to relationship status and happiness, particularly from Amy’s perspective, as someone who has been single, married, divorced, and now dating. Amy shared that she believes happiness can be found both in relationships and in being single, though personally she wants a partner to share life with. The discussion acknowledged that marriages can go through miserable periods, where couples must either work to improve things or choose to part ways. Research from the Institute for Family Studies was introduced, stating that while many single women believe single life is the happiest and most fulfilling, studies show that married mothers report the highest levels of meaning and happiness. It was noted that mothers are nearly twice as likely to describe themselves as very happy compared to single women without children. The group questioned whether societal expectations placed on single, childless women might influence these findings, particularly for those who want children, but cannot have them.

Amy spoke about her own fertility journey, explaining that she and her ex-husband never received a clear medical reason for their infertility. They chose adoption rather than IVF, which allowed her to become a mother. The conversation touched on later-in-life pregnancies, referencing Cassie Kelley, wife of Charles Kelley, who became pregnant unexpectedly in her forties. This led to Amy reflecting on whether she would want to start over with a baby at her current stage of life, noting that her children are now teenagers and that she has found a rhythm in that phase of parenting. She also shared that if she were to have another child, she would want to be in a committed marriage and would not want to raise a baby on her own.
