The NBA is doing something new in the future, at least if new NBA Commissioner Adam Silver gets his way.

Silver told an audience at the IMG World Congress of Sports on Wednesday that sponsor logos would most likely be coming in the next five years on the jersey of NBA players.

"It just creates that much more of an opportunity for our marketing partners to get to get that much closer to our fans and to our players", said NBA Commissioner Adam Sliver.

In 2011, it was Silver who said putting logos on jerseys would be worth about $100 million dollars a year to the NBA.

The big snag is incorporating local and regional sponsor onto jerseys while the National TV Partners in ESPN and Turner may have competing corporate sponsors on their networks already and may compromise those relationships.

The current idea is for the NBA to allow a single patch for each team.  Each sponsor logo patch would be 2 1/2 inches by 2 1/2 inches.

Personally, I think its a genius idea.  I'm all about creating more revenue which only helps the brand and overall product on the field of play.

In addition, it would in my opinion, also create opportunities for new deals to be brokered. Some business and corporate partners I think would be more adapt to entering the NBA world as a sponsor if they are guaranteed the type of exposure jersey sponsorships would create.

The WNBA already has such sponsor as well as other professional leagues including Nascar and it seems not only to be a good fit, but a great way to stream more revenue.

Not quite sure why there would be any resistance from the fans or viewers, so as long as they can figure out how to not compromise current sponsorship relations, it seems like a slam dunk.
