South Dakota and Minnesota are working together to reintroduce lake sturgeon to a body of water they share.

Lake sturgeon are being stocked in Big Stone Lake, where they once flourished, through the efforts of South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

GF&P says the last known lake sturgeon in Big Stone washed up on shore in 1946, but now 4,000 tagged fingerlings are being released into the lake, and crews will keep at it for up to 20 years.

Lake sturgeon can grow up to 300 pounds, and if they aren't caught can live as long as 100 years.

Big Stone Lake is 12,610 acres, so if there are enough insect larvae, crayfish and mollusks, they'll have plenty of room to grow.
