‘Explorers’ is Getting Remade

Too often Hollywood wants to remake perfect movies. When they redo films like ‘Halloween’ or ‘Pyscho’ the quality level has virtually only one place to go. So it’s always exciting to hear that they want to take a flawed but fascinating film and give it a new spin, which is why it’s good to hear that ‘Explorers’ is the latest film to get the remake treatment.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will be remade by Paramount (who produced the original) and will be produced by ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ writers Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec, and scripted by Geoff Moore and Dave Posamentier — who wrote ‘Better Living Through Chemistry’ (which is hitting select theaters and VOD this week). So far so good, but an insider notes the tone would be similar to the upcoming ‘Welcome to Yesterday,’ which is a found footage time travel movie, and with Paramount’s low budget division Insurge behind this remake, it’s possible this could be a found footage movie. Which is a fad we wish would have died out by now (at least for low budget studio movies).

That said, the original 1985 version, which starred Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix and was directed by Joe Dante, was a rush job that had a problematic third act and story compromises that made everyone involved disappointed with the film. ‘Explorers’ has since found a loyal audience due to home video, but any remake would likely take just the idea at the heart of the movie, which is that three young boys build a spaceship.
