A Sioux Falls day care provider is charged with a felony for an incident that put a four-month-old baby in a hospital.

Officer Sam Clemens says the child was injured on August 7th, when the infant was taken to the hospital with injuries that medical staff determined were suspicious in nature. He says detectives learned that the provider was the only one present, and that she is believed to have caused the boy’s injuries.

Clemens says Karen Ann Leraas, 59, is charged with abuse or cruelty to a minor under the age of 7, a Class 3 felony. He says the infant had a subdural hematoma and retinal hemorrhaging.

The child is still in the hospital but is said to be improving.

Leraas was arrested on Monday.
