You probably haven't heard about the latest designer drug being used in South Dakota!  It's called 25i.  In its liquid form, the synthetic, hallucinogenic drug is clear and colorless.

Will Coolidge, an Avera Emergency Department Pharmacist, says 25i is deadly.

"Very small amounts of the drug can cause seizures. For someone using it for the first time, and isn't very experienced with 25i, it can be deadly. Some of the side effects include anxiety, agitation, nervousness, cardiac and respiratory arrest."

Unfortunately, Will says 25i is gaining in popularity among young people.

"They think it's easier to use and maybe a little safer. 25i is actually bought illicitly on the internet. There are many internet sites that offer the drug. Unfortunately, the drug is manufactured in China and then sent to the United States through different shipping channels. It's hard for the FDA, the DEA and the state of South Dakota to regulate the drug."

Right now, the state's Division of Criminal Investigation is looking into South Dakota's first confirmed report of 25i.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration linked the drug to at least 19 deaths between March 2012 and August 2013.
