The prescription drug drop-off boxes in the lobby of the Law Enforcement Center in Sioux Falls have been a big success. And police are reminding residents of the service they provide.

The boxes are a place for residents to safely dispose of medications they no longer want or need, and Information Officer Sam Clemens says the response since they were installed permanently has shown the need:

Clemens says the effort began with a US Drug Enforcement Administration program for a one-day drop-off in the fall of 2011 and again in the spring of 2012, that brought in a total of 1300 pounds of medications.

There are no forms to fill out, and the boxes are available from 6am until 10pm, when the lobby of the Law Enforcement Center on West 4th Street is open.

Clemens says there are three boxes--one for pills, one for sharps and a third for chemo drugs.

No liquids are accepted.
