A Sioux Falls man is in jail and a two-year-old child is hospitalized in critical condition after an incident Wednesday afternoon.

Police say they were called around 5:46 p.m. on Wednesday to an apartment in the 6200 block of South Connie Avenue, where they found the unresponsive child.

Investigators say the child had been under the care of a 27-year-old man they identify as the boyfriend of the child's mother.

The two-year-old was rushed to a hospital, where it was learned he had sustained bodily injuries that police say were not accidental and were consistent with abuse.

Other sources are reporting that the child's father is Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson, who was in Sioux falls on Thursday. But Police Information Officer Sam Clemens would not talk about the child's father:

Twenty-seven-year-old Joseph Robert Patterson was arrested on charges of aggravated battery of an infant and aggravated assault. He was scheduled for an appearance in Lincoln County Circuit Court in Canton this morning.

At last report the child was in critical condition with head injuries.
