A Sioux Falls police officer who was on routine patrol late Thursday night came in contact with an individual in the Tuthill Park area who was holding what the officer believed to be a handgun.

According to a Sioux Falls Police Department press release, the subject would not comply with the officer's demands. The officer then fired "several rounds" at the subject. The suspect then fled into a wooded area.

The officer was not injured and police are reminding the residents of Tuthill Park area to be vigilant and report any unusual activity.

Sioux Fall police set up a command post at Lincoln High School parking lot and the SDHP chopper landed in the early morning hours to assist in the search.

Suspect is described as a white man wearing all black clothing and should be considered armed and dangerous.

In a police briefing Friday morning, officer Sam Clemens said, Tuthill Park remains closed but it will be safe for the public when it does reopen.
