Packers Survive Saints, Blown Call, To Win 28-27

The Green Bay Packers needed a missed field goal late in the 4th quarter to hang on to a 28-27 win Sunday afternoon against the New Orleans Saints.

In a back and forth game, the Packers took the lead with seven minutes left in the game on Aaron Rodgers’ fourth touchdown pass of the afternoon, this one to Jordy Nelson. On the ensuing kickoff, New Orleans’ Darren Sproles fumbled. The referees ruled him down by contact and gave the Saints the ball back. Replays clearly showed Sproles had fumbled, but Green Bay was out of challenges. There was nothing they could do except play defense (which they hadn’t done much of all afternoon) and try to stop Drew Brees and the Saints offense.

Brees drove New Orleans to the Green Bay 25 where the drive stalled. Saints kicker Garrett Hartley kicked what appeared to be a go-ahead 43 yard field goal that was nullified by a holding call on New Orleans. Hartley lined up to attempt a 53 yarder, when Green Bay jumped offsides. So Hartley lined up from 48 yards and pushed the kick wide.

The Packers ran the clock out to even their record at 2-2 on the young season while New Orleans remains winless at 0-4.

With last Monday nights blown call in Seattle that cost them a win last week still fresh in their minds and especially the fans’ minds, there may have been a riot in Lambeau Field had the late call cost them another win.

Of course they could’ve tried to slow the Saints Drew Brees down a little as well as Brees tallied 446 yards and three touchdowns in the loss.

The Packers travel to Indianapolis to face a rested Colts team coming off their bye week while the Saints get a prime time game Sunday evening against San Diego to try to get in the win column for the first time this season.
