Minnesota Terror Threat Thwarted

We live a fairly insulated life in southeastern South Dakota, northwest Iowa and southwestern Minnesota. We don’t have the highs and lows of the economy and we don’t have crime like they do in major metropolitan areas. But that changed a little on Friday (May 3) when the F.B.I. descended on a trailer park in Montevideo, Minnesota, just 127 miles northeast of Sioux Falls, to raid a ‘localized terror threat.’

With the Boston Marathon bombings still fresh in our minds, the F.B.I. arrested 24-year old Buford Rogers on a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. That wasn’t the only thing found in Rogers’ mobile home however.

Authorities also recovered Molotov cocktails, suspected pipe bombs and firearms. Authorities say that they believed Rogers was in the early planning stages of a terrorist attack in Montevideo, a town of about 5,000, north of Marshall, Minnesota, and west of the Twin Cities.

In a news release Monday, the FBI said it believed “the lives of several local residents were potentially saved” by the search and arrest, and said “several guns and explosive devices were discovered.”

Instead of reading about a story on one of the coasts, or the middle east, this is a threat in our own backyard. I’ve never been to Montevideo, Minnesota and don’t know anyone who has ever lived there, but the world got a little smaller and a little scarier with news that these types of threats exist even in our own ‘insulated’ little world.
