For the second time in the past four days, a South Dakota officer has been involved in a shooting. The first was in Yankton on Tuesday night, the second was in Mitchell Friday morning.

Mitchell’s incident came to a more tragic conclusion. The details were confirmed by Attorney General Marty Jackley.

The Mitchell Police Department responded to a disturbance call at a Mitchell residence located at the 500 block of N. Mentzer Street at 1:52 on the morning of Friday September 4. During the call to service, the Officer encountered a subject with a gun. The incident escalated and during an ensuing struggle Mitchell Police Officer Russ Stevenson shot the armed subject with the subject’s gun. The male subject identified as Curtis James Meyer, 37, Mitchell, died at the scene.

As is the case in all officer-involved shootings, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation will be busy poring over the details to determine if the shooting was justified.

At the completion of the investigation, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation will issue a case report and shooting summation to be reviewed by the Attorney General for a final determination on the officer’s action. The release of the summary is anticipated within 30 days.
