UPDATE: Sioux Falls police confirmed at 12:30 PM that both I-229 and S. Minnesota Avenue are both now open.

A semi truck careening out of control on I-229 broke through a guardrail and plummeted onto Minnesota Avenue below hitting a car about to drive under the interstate bridge.

Tony Mangan, Public Information Officer says the crash happened Sunday January 15th at 4:30 AM:

A 2017 International truck tractor was northbound on Interstate 229 nearing the Minnesota Avenue bridge when the truck tractor went off the roadway, hitting the guard rail. The vehicle fell onto Minnesota Avenue where the tractor hit the front of a southbound 2015 Chrysler 300.

The 43 year old male semi truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene.  The 23 year old female driver of the Chrysler 300 had minor injuries and was admitted to a local hospital.

Sergeant Jess Speckmeier of the Sioux Falls Police Department says Minnesota Avenue is closed from 49th Street to Lotta Street and Interstate-229 is closed for northbound traffic from Western Avenue to Minnesota Avenue.

The investigation is ongoing at this time.
