Early Wednesday morning, two police officers out of the metro Des Moines area were fatally shot in an ambush-style attack.

At around 1:05 a.m., officers from the Des Moines and Urbandale areas were alerted to reports of gunfire. When they responded to the scene, they were ambushed by a single shooter.

The first officers who came across the scene found an officer fatally shot. Then 20 minutes later at about 1:26 a.m., another officer was shot as he responded to the scene. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died.

In both instances, the officers were gunned down in their patrol vehicles.

The investigation is still underway, but more information is being released as the day goes on.

The name of the suspect was identified at 7:30 a.m. and alleged shooter Scott Michael Greene was taken into custody around 9:30 this morning.

This is the first police officer shooting for Des Moines since 1977, when two separate incidents left two officers dead.
