It's an odd name, to begin with. But once you figure out that Cranksgiving is a bike event to collect food to feed people, it all comes into focus.

This Saturday (Nov. 11) is Cranksgiving in Sioux Falls. Registration starts at noon. Riders leave at 1 p.m. and it ends at 3 p.m. There is a team element if you're into that or you can do it yourself. There are prizes for top finishers and lots of ways to accumulate points and also win prizes.

And it's nationwide. The Sioux Falls version is sponsored by Spoke-n-Sport bikes and Bike Sioux Falls in support of Feeding South Dakota

It's kind of a race, if you're into that. But that's not really the point either. Basically you ride around and buy certain items at food -- preferably at one of several locally owned outlets. You takes some picture. Use your social media.

Or just ride around and collect food and bring it back to the shop where it's all collected and sent to Feeding South Dakota.

You can get all the details on how to participate here.

Or listen to my interview with Chad Pickard, owner and operator of Spoke-n-Sport, on The Patrick Lalley show here.

It's a contest embedded in a bike ride embedded in human empathy. Or as the Cranksgiving.org website puts it:

Cranksgiving is a food drive on two wheels.
Part bike ride, part food drive, and part scavenger hunt.
All you need is a bike, a bag, and a lock!

I've done it and had a great time. Have fun and help the hungry. What could be better?
