Corn detasseling is a summer job that is hot and a lot of hard work.  It's also a summer job that many students and adults rely on.  But those students and adults that were looking forward to this part-time job are going to have to look for other employment because a western Iowa corn detasseling outfit will not be hiring this summer.

CEO of Siouxland Detasseling, Ron Foster, says that a decline in corn production has caused a cutback on hiring individuals for this summer position.  Siouxland Detasseling has hired about 200 workers every summer since 1983.  The crews of detasselers would usually work fields in the Jefferson and Elk Point areas of South Dakota and north of Onawa to Salix in Iowa.

Corn detasslers walk the rows of corn in fields and pull the pollinating tassels off the top of the plants that will produce seed for future planting.
