Mikael Ashame, 19, of Sioux Falls has been identified as the victim who was accidentally shot and killed early Saturday morning.

Sioux Falls Police Captain Blaine Larson says around eight people had been at the apartment drinking and smoking marijuana and were passing around a loaded AK-47. Larson says David Randle Jr. was checking out the gun when he accidentally shot Ashame in the leg hitting an artery. Ashame bled to death.

Larson says Randle tried to perform life-saving efforts on Ashame until medics arrived.

Randle was arrested and charged with first-degree manslaughter.

Larson says the owner of the gun, 19-year-old Mason Mitzel, was found in Brandon. When officers arrived at an acquaintance’s house, Mitzel barricaded himself in a basement for about 30 minutes.

During a check of Mitzel’s car, Larson says they found eight pounds of marijuana in brick form, 81 containers of hash oil, and a large amount of cash.

Mitzel is charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance, possession with the intent to distribute, possession of marijuana and violation of a drug-free zone.
