What state in the United States has the most people? If you said California you would be correct. Now, which state has the 2nd highest population? Texas?  Yep. So the state with the third highest population must be New York correct?  Nope. It's not.

My family and I recently took a trip over the Christmas break to Florida. We checked out Key West, Homestead, Miami and South Beach, Ft. Lauderdale and more. While we were there, two of our sons mentioned that Sioux Falls at one time had more people than Miami. Check this out. Miami-Dade County Florida had a population of 861 in 1890. Sioux Falls already had 21,869 people.

Fast forward to 2016. Miami-Dade County Florida has over 2.16 million residents. Minnehaha County in South Dakota including the states largest city Sioux Falls had 182,800 . I'm sure we've grown a lot in the past 3 years but you see where I'm going.

Back to the original question, the state with the 3rd highest population in The United States isn't New York, it's Florida.
