Sioux Falls Police Spokesman Sam Clemens says two handguns were taken from two vehicles over the weekend.

"Both of those cars were unlocked. It's just the same message that some people are not getting. We really need to remember to lock our vehicles and you're not leaving items inside of them."

Clemens says thieves are always searching for unlocked cars and then taking what's inside.

"The serious thing about leaving a gun in an unlocked car---you really don't know who's going to have access to it or where it's going to go from there. Obviously there are checks in place so not everybody can go out and purchase a handgun. But, if you leave it in a vehicle and it's unlocked you just don't know where it might turn up or what it's going to be used for."

Clemens says this isn't the first time guns have been stolen from unlocked cars in Sioux Falls.
