General Motors announced that they will lead the automotive industry with the first self-driving car on American roads. The new technology is called, "Super Cruise" and it will be featured in the 2017 Cadillac.

The key will be in a system called V2V - vehicle to vehicle - technology and should, according to General Motors, make the roads a safer place. V2V will be able to detect unsafe road conditions, hazards, traffic congestion, and other vehicles on the road.

However, the entire program works only if other cars on the road have a V2V system or the 2017 Cadillac would only be able to detect other Cadillac models with V2V to "talk to" on the road.

GM says safety is their first priority and that the system must work 100% of the time without fail. Until then, it's best to keep the cell phones out of reach, hands on the wheel, and eyes on the road.

The 2017 Cadillac will be available in late 2016.
