If you listen to my radio show, you already know quite a bit about Penny the pooping, peeing puppy. If you don't listen, I'll enlighten you. Penny is a puppy. A Great Dane puppy. A soon to be, getting real big DOG and as she's grown has turned into Penny, the pooping, peeing, pulling puppy.

Let me preface this store. I don't know much about dogs and dog training. Sure, I took Dog in 4-H years ago so I have a base of knowledge. I do know what I like and don't like. When I see a dog walking on a loose leash right beside the owner, that's what I like! According to Gentle Leader by Petsafe.com;

When your dog pulls, the Gentle Leader gently moves his head and body back towards you. This effectively refocuses his attention back to you and off the distraction. Unlike a muzzle, the nose loop gently moves your dog's head when he pulls, while still allowing him to pant and bark. The collar sits high on your dog's neck without putting pressure on the throat.

The other day my wife and I were walking through Menard's east store in Sioux Falls. While looking through their pet department I noticed the Gentle Leader. I had seen them on dogs before so decided to pick one up. I think it was about $20. Turns out to be the best $20 I've ever spent.

The leash comes with a video of how to acclimate your dog to the collar. It takes some getting used to for the dog. The video shows you how to work with your dog to get it on him or her.

The first time I took Penny out for a walk it was Crazy Different. A Game Changer! She was walking CALMLY right beside me. [carrying treats with you when your pet is hungry is helpful too] We took off around the block and there she was, walking right beside me on a loose leash. It was like she was 5 years older and listening.

The leash comes with training tips. You don't pull, or jerk. You simply shorten up the leash and walk where you want to walk. No pulling. No lunging ahead. Nothing.

I've done a little reading about the product. It fits snugly, high on their neck right behind their ears and goes over their nose as well. What's crazy is, it has a calming effect on Penny too. When it's on she's calmer and more apt to listen.

If you have a pulling puppy, or an older dog I strongly suggest. It is designed for dogs that have a prominent snout. They say more difficult to use on a dog with a flat face. Now when I walk with Penny the pooping, peeing puppy, there's no more pulling.

If you have a dog, and have used a gentle leader collar, I'd love to hear from you. Post your comments in the Facebook comments or below on this story. You can also email me at jdcollins@kikn.com.
