Gas Prices are Falling Off a Cliff

The only good thing right now during the COVID-19 outbreak is that gas prices have dropped considerably.

The average price for a gallon of gas in South Dakota has dropped 15 cents in the last week to $2.05, according to AAA. That is the tenth-largest drop of any state over the last week.

“Typically gas prices start to trend more expensive at the beginning of spring, especially as motorists get out to enjoy the warmer weather and travel for spring break. That is not the case this year,” said Marilyn Buskohl, AAA spokesperson. “With Americans urged to stay at home and practice social distancing to slow the spread of coronavirus, we are seeing less traffic on the roadways which will ultimately drive down demand, increase gasoline supply and push pump prices less expensive for the foreseeable future.”

A month ago the average price for gas in South Dakota was $2.48 and a year ago it was $2.48.

In Sioux Falls the average price is quite a bit lower at $1.95 per gallon, according to GasBuddy.com. The cheapest gas is at Costco for $1.95, but the price at most stations around town is between $1.90 and $1.99.
