Sioux Falls Fire and Rescue crews were up and at it early Saturday morning in downtown Sioux Falls.

A fire broke out around 4:30 A.M. on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at Mi Tierra Mexican Restaurant and Bakery, located at 337 South Phillips Avenue.

An eyewitness noticed smoke emanating from the building and immediately called 911.

Fire crews forced their way into the structure to search for occupants on the main floor and basement levels upon arrival.

Crews were able to quickly extinguish a smoldering fire located in the back kitchen area of the building. According to reports, the kitchen and main floor of the structure sustained a fair amount of heat and smoke damage.

Fortunately, no one was in the building at the time of the fire.

According to Sioux Falls Fire Rescue representative Mike Top, the fire appeared to have started in the back of the restaurant near an electrical panel. The cause has not yet been determined.

ATF is helping out with the ongoing investigation.
