I was talking with my oldest son last night and the new song from Darius Rucker came up.  Wagon Wheel.

So, we were talking about the song and the 'beauty' of the lyrics.  Bob Dylan wrote the song.  Here's how the conversation went.

'Dude was hitchhiking.  HITCHHIKING!'  'People don't do that anymore.'  That's what my son Jacob said tonight when we were talking about the song 'Wagon Wheel' that Darius Rucker currently has as a hit on.  Check out the lyrics.

Headed down south to the land of the pines
And I'm thumbin' my way into North Caroline
Starin' up the road
Pray to God I see headlights

He was Hitch-Hiking!  Do people do that any more?  Thumb a ride?   I love this song!

I made it down the coast in seventeen hours
Pickin' me a bouquet of dogwood flowers
And I'm a hopin' for Raleigh
I can see my baby tonight

So, then the question comes up.  Did Bob Dylan ever live in Sioux Falls and go to Washington High School?   Heck no!  Maybe... yes,  Duluth, MN, but Washington High School?  No?

So I picked up the phone and called friend Steve Mayer who graduated in 1976 or was it 1975.  He says,

No, not that I know of. But Mary Hart was my P.E. teacher. Does that count for something? (note to self, Mary Hart, good story topic for Sioux Falls)

Walkin' to the south out of Roanoke
I caught a trucker out of Philly
Had a nice long toke
But he's a headed west from the Cumberland Gap
To Johnson City, Tennessee

Back to Bob Dylan and Darius Rucker.

There's a reason they call it poetry.  It is a beautiful song.  It's really Dylan at his best.    You can just about feel the empty stomach of the guy hitching a ride. ''

You can almost feel the want in his watch as he waits for another car to come by.

I had never given it much thought.  Do you think Bob Dylan was Hitchhiking when he wrote the song?  It would be so cool to talk to him about the song and how he wrote it!

So.  Did he?  Did Bob Dylan Live here in Sioux Falls. You know, maybe for a couple weeks and went to Washington High School while he was here? Now, The Old Washington Highs School is now The Washington Pavilion.

The... Greatest Poet... of our time?

We're on a quest to find out.  Did Bob Dylan go to school, (for a short period of time) at Washington High School, when it was the Old Washington High School?   Details coming soon.  Here's The Old Crow Medicine Show version (VERY COOL: Video)

Mumford and Sons did a cover too BBC radio 2 session

And a guy named Matt Anderson
