33 Cars Vandalized in Sioux Falls: Tips to Keep Your Vehicle Safe
It seems that even the frigid temperatures can’t deter vandals from targeting vehicles in Sioux Falls. A recent spree of car vandalism over the weekend has left many wondering what can be done to protect their rides from being a target.
According to Dakota News Now, a total of 33 incidents of vehicle vandalism were reported to Sioux Falls Police over the weekend. It all started early Saturday morning with calls from the 300 block of North Holly Avenue.
Then, on Sunday, additional reports came in from apartment complexes on South Ellis Road and South Cathy Road. The common thread? Broken windows.
Tips to Keep Your Vehicle Safe
Sioux Falls Police have shared some valuable tips to help residents protect their vehicles from becoming the next target. Here’s how you can safeguard your car and keep it safe from unwanted damage.
1. Choose Covered or Secured Parking When Possible
- Parking in a garage or other covered area can reduce the likelihood of vandalism, especially during high-risk times like late at night or early in the morning. If you live in an apartment complex, check if they offer designated, secured parking.
2. Park in Well-Lit, High-Traffic Areas
- If you must park outside, choose a well-lit area near a road with traffic or in a place with security cameras near-by.
3. Avoid Leaving Valuable Items in View and Keep the Interior Uncluttered
- Keeping valuables out of sight can discourage criminal activity. A thief or vandal might break a window just to steal a purse or electronics. Use your car’s trunk or glove compartment to store items out of view. And please, don't leave firearms unattended in your vehicle.
4. Remove Keys and Lock Doors When Vehicle is Unattended
- Always take the keys or keyfob with you. Instead of leaving the keys in an unattended, running car, consider installing a remote car starter to start your vehicle from a distance.
5. Consider Security Cameras on Your Home or Install a Dash Cam
- If you live in an area prone to vandalism, consider installing a home security system with cameras or a dash cam that monitors your parking space.
6. Install a Car Alarm or Tracking System
- An audible car alarm that triggers when the vehicle is tampered with can scare off vandals. Some modern car tracking systems also include features that can notify you of tampering or theft, adding an extra layer of protection.
7. Consider a Steering Wheel Lock or Other Anti-Theft Devices
- Devices like steering wheel locks, tire locks, or pedal locks make your car harder to tamper with or steal. They can make your car a less appealing target.
8. Get to Know Your Neighbors
- Try to build relationships with your neighbors. People who know each other are more likely to notice suspicious activity and alert you or the authorities if something happens.
