It is perhaps one of the greatest comfort treats ever created - the donut.

Whether it's a box full of a dozen glazed or a variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and flavors, nothing seems to bring together people better than these fried pieces of heaven.

Just think about how the mood of so many breakrooms and conference rooms are brightened each week by the arrival of that iconic box of goodness.

But which are our favorite donuts?

The folks at The Waycroft, an apartment complex in Arlington, Virginia, dove deep into Google Trends searches from the past year and they discovered that when it comes to donuts, for most Americans, the simpler the better.

As reported by Mental Floss, a whopping 15 states say they can't get enough of glazed donuts. That's roughly one-third of the country.

This relative newcomer to the sweets scene was created in 2013 at Dominique Ansel Bakery in New York City. It gets its name the croissant-type dough that's used to make this donut-shaped treat, which is filled with flavored cream and fried in grapeseed oil.

Despite the story listing the cronut as the Mount Rushmore State's 'most popular' donut, I am using the term 'most searched for' instead due to one simple fact - it is extremely difficult to find cronuts in this part of the world.

Six other states prefer the cronut as well.
