I know it seems like spring is still eons away since Old Man Winter has us locked in a bitter cold vice grip once again this week, but trust me, spring and warmer temps are on the way!

One of the sure signs that spring is right around the corner is the 2015 St. Patrick's Day Parade.

The 36th annual Sioux Falls St. Patty's Day Parade is slated for Saturday, March 14.

The fun begins with the Painting of the Shamrock at 9th Street and North Phillips Avenue. The parade will form at 5th Street and North Main Avenue at 12:30 PM and will officially start at 2 PM.

This years route is south on Main Avenue to 13th Street, west to Phillips Avenue and then north to 8th Street. Streets on the route are closed at 1:30 PM and parking is not allowed on the route starting late Saturday morning.

If you want to participate in the St. Patty's Day Parade, there are a couple of things you need to know. First, your entry must have an Irish theme and placement in the parade is on a first come, first served basis and is at the discretion of parade officials.

Participants can register by filling out the form available at siouxfallschamber.com. There is no entry fee to participate. But each adult (age 16 and older) participating in the parade must purchase and wear an official St. Patrick’s Day Parade button. Buttons are $3.00 available at the Chamber of Commerce office at 200 North Phillips Ave., Suite 102.

Remember, that no candy can be distributed along the parade route. Handing out candy is forbidden by a Sioux Falls City ordinance.

Betty Ordal has been chosen as the Grand Marshall for the 2015 parade. She recently retired as director of membership services for the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce, and is a native of Montrose.

There will also be three running events connected with the St. Patty's Day Parade.

  • A 5 mile run which begins at 5th and Phillips Ave. that morning at 9 AM.
  • A 5K run starting at 11:30 AM at 5th and Phillips Ave.
  • And the annual St. Patty's Day mile run starting at 2:00 PM near 17th Street and North Phillips Ave.

Packet pickup and additional race information can be found here.
