Thinking about a new career in 2017? Here’s a tip from the experts: When you’re out there interviewing, there’s one question you should not answer under any circumstances.

You should never tell a potential employer your previous or current salary. Offering that information puts you at a huge disadvantage when it comes time to negotiate your salary. It gives the employer a "ballpark" to work with when the job could be paying much more.

This is actually a hot button topic and some U.S. politicians are working to pass laws to ban companies from even asking.

Whether a law comes through or not, just dodge the question. If filling out a job application, just leave it blank. If asked in person in an interview, just politely say you'd prefer not to divulge that information.
