The next time you're shopping at a Mom and Pop business make sure to thank them for what they do - because this country couldn't survive without them.

Even though it's only "officially" observed once a year - March 29 is 'Mom and Pop Business Owners Day' - it's something we should be celebrating every day.

I truly believe the country couldn't survive without the Mom and Pop businesses that dot so many of our Main Streets across this great land.

Small business has always been a vital, yet for some reason not fully appreciated, part of the U.S. economy. They're the ones keeping many of our communities alive.

They provide that one-on-one personal service you won't find anywhere else. Unlike some of the big national chains, they really do know their products

Plus, when you call a Mom and Pop business you're more than likely to get a real, live person answering the phone, which is pretty rare in this day-in-age.

I can't stress enough how important it is that we get out and support the small business owners in our cities - now more than ever before.

Given what we've been hearing lately about Amazon, Walmart and other big box stores increasing their efforts to get you to buy online, we seem to be at a cross-roads.

Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but I for one like to be able to see and hold whatever I'm looking at purchasing. That way I know what I'm getting.

And here's the clincher for me - statics show that for every $100 you spend at a locally owned business $68 stays in the community.

What happens when you spend that same $100 at a national chain? Only $43 stays in the community.

According to the research firm Civic Economics, on average, 48% of the money spent locally is recirculated in the community, compared to just 14% spent at chain stores.

Our boss here at Results Radio / Townsquare Media is a champion when it comes to supporting small business. Don Jacobs is constantly preaching "Buy Local."

Without small business owners who's going to support the local non-profit organizations in your city, or hire your kid over the summer months?

So celebrate National 'Mom and Pop Business Owners Day' by showing your support. Shop their stores, not only today, but everyday!
