Steadfast Republican Support Continues in Mount Rushmore State
South Dakota voters continued the trend of overwhelming support for Republicans in statewide races. They did their best to work towards a Republican sweep of the Congress, Senate and Presidency.
At the top of the ticket Donald Trump captured about twice as many votes as Hillary Clinton. Meanwhile John Thune bested Jay Williams in the U. S. Senate race and was thankful for a strong push from South Dakotans to elect him to a third term.
“South Dakotans inspire me, they encourage me, they pray for me, they criticize me sometimes. Tonight they have honored me with their vote and I am forever grateful for that. I will do my best to be deserving of that support.”
Meanwhile Kristi Noem earned her fourth term in the U. S. House of Representatives by a sizable margin over Paula Hawks. The Congresswoman elect says her faith is her guide while serving South Dakota.
“Those of you who know me, know that I love the Lord. My faith causes me to be somebody that you can trust, that will tell you the truth, that believes in serving other people and that it’s important to fight when you have core values and principles that are worth fighting for.”
The strongest showing of the night came from Chris Nelson who captured the most votes of any candidate on a South Dakota ballot in his win over Henry Red Cloud in the PUC race.
Libertarians had one of their best showings with the Johnson/Weld ticket flirting with six percent of the vote for President.
