  • Weatherproof windows and doors. This can be the most effective thing you can to that will not only keep your living space warm but also save money in heating costs.
  • Speaking of heating, now is the time to have your heating system checked and tuned up for winter. You don't want to have your furnace quit on a night when the temps drop below zero.

  • Consider insulating pipes, especially in unheated areas like basements, crawl spaces, under mobile homes, or a garage.
  • Have a reliable way to remove snow. Invest in a quality snow blower or at the very least buy a sturdy shovel. Don't forget to buy a bag of de-icing salt for sidewalks.

  • An emergency kit should be at the top of your vehicle winter prep list. Blankets, a flashlight, non-perishable snacks, a first aid kit, jumper cables, and a small shovel are the basics. Don't forget a phone charger!
  • Winter tires are a great way to ensure your vehicle can maintain control in slippery conditions. The softer rubber compound in winter tires reacts better with cold road surfaces, allowing your vehicle to maintain traction better.

  • Is your vehicle's battery ready for the cold? Winter tires are no help if the battery can't start the engine. Consult your owner's manual and buy a battery with the highest cold-cranking amps that your vehicle's electrical system can handle.
  • Ensure that the engine coolant and oil are fresh and your windshield washer fluid is specifically rated for at least 20 below zero temps. Washer fluid designed for fair weather use can and will freeze.
  • Have a brush to clean off snow from the window and body of your vehicle. Don't forget to remove snow from your headlights and taillights!
