Speed-eating contests are growing in popularity during 4th of July weekends. This one ended in tragedy for a competitive eater in Custer, South Dakota over the fourth of July weekend.

According to the Custer County Sheriff, Walter Eagle Tail, 47, died at a hospital after attempts to save him failed at the scene of a hot dog eating contest held annually in Custer.

Funeral arrangements were pending for Eagle Tail, whom friends described as a fun-loving, kind and caring man.

The Custer Chamber of Commerce canceled a pie-eating contest scheduled for the next day.
