Social media proved to be an invaluable tool on Monday, January 25 for the Sioux Falls School District.

A student at a Sioux Falls school informed school staff of a post on Instragram regarding the potential threat of gun violence within the district.

Administrators, together with Sioux Falls police thoroughly investigated the tip and determined it was not a credible threat to Sioux Falls schools. It was instead deemed that the threat message was actually in reference to a school located in Florida.

The message made its way to Sioux Falls through social media.

Once the determination was made the district immediately informed parents that there was no threat to Sioux Falls students via an email and automated phone message.

The message sent out to families by the district informed parents of the potential threat discovered on Instagram. It also provided a detailed explanation of how the threat was investigated by the administration and police and was found not to be a credible threat for schools in Sioux Falls and reminded parents that their students are safe. In the message the district talked about how technology can be used as a powerful tool, and to please speak with your student about using it to spread the positive things going on at their school and not for feeding into rumors and fear.
