Sioux Falls Police Information Officer Sam Clemens says a woman who tried to buy a car from a seller in West Virginia told authorities she was scammed out of $3,000.

"Our investigators are working with the investigators at eBAY and in West Virginia. They're trying to identify this person and hopefully figure out who this individual is."

Clemens urges residents to do a lot of research before sending money to purchase an item.

"There are a lot of scams out there both on eBAY and other internet sites. Do a lot of checking on your end before you start to send money, money orders or gift cards---whatever it might be. The extra work will save some hassles in the long run."

Clemens says the car never arrived in Sioux Falls.
