Sioux Falls Police Captain Loren McManus says Halloween is typically a safe night for the trick-or-treaters in Sioux Falls!

“In the 23 years that I have been at the police department, we have had a couple of situations where some children were struck by cars. Thankfully there were no injuries. The kids were excited and darted out in front of the cars. They didn’t seem them coming and were bumped into. We have had some children that had gotten lost within their groups. We helped them find the groups. On some occasions we have had some medical emergencies where the children had a reaction to something they had eaten. But, really for the most part, it’s well organized. People follow good rules. It’s usually a pretty fun evening.”

McManus has this message for motorists.

“At this point, we don’t plan to have any additional officers on duty Halloween night. But, certainly those officers that are working during the later afternoon and late evening hours will be cognizant that there will be a lot more foot traffic out. I always encourage residents to make sure they are driving carefully through neighborhoods. The kids are really excited and may not be paying attention to what they are doing. It’s our job to watch out for them.”

McManus says parents should be talking to their kids about Halloween safety.
