PIERRE - A Sioux Falls doctor has been recognized for his work in support of childhood immunizations in South Dakota.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention honored Dr. Wendell Hoffman with a Childhood Immunization Champion award.

State Health Secretary Doneen Hollingsworth says Hoffman has become the leading authority on immunization in South Dakota during his 27-year medical career. She says Hoffman is the South Dakota State Medical Association's spokesman on childhood immunizations and has testified before the Legislature about the importance of maintaining state laws on immunization.

Hoffman is patient safety officer for Sanford Health.
