The city of Brookings is in shock upon hearing the news that a student at South Dakota State University was stabbed in a dorm room over the weekend.

KDLT TV is reporting the incident took place early Sunday morning, February 26 in Brown Hall on the campus of SDSU.

The suspect in the stabbing is a former SDSU student that was allegedly acting in self-defense at the time of the incident.

According to reports, the suspect, 19-year-old Lucky Mai, was staying in his friends’ dorm room after he was removed from the school Friday where he is no longer a student.

Mai told authorities he went to bed around 2:30 AM Sunday and claims he was alone in the room at the time he went to sleep. He also said he left the door to the dorm room unlocked because his friends had not returned yet.

The report says that Mai told authorities he woke up just before 5:00 AM to an unknown naked person who was standing inside the room urinating on objects.

According to Mai, the individual then laid down next to him, so Mai grabbed a knife on the dresser in the room because he “was scared and acted in self-defense.”

The report states that after the victim laid down next to Mai, he began to touch his leg in a patting motion.

Mai said he did not receive any threats from the victim, and that he was not harmed other than getting a small cut on his hand. The victim suffered serious stab wounds and is currently in stable condition after being airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital.

Authorities apprehended Mai. He is currently in jail facing an aggravated assault charge.

SDSU does allow guests to stay in dorm rooms, if, the student registers the guest with campus officials.

Firearms are not allowed on the campus of SDSU, but knives less than 5 inches long are permitted. It's not known at this time if the knife used during Sunday's incident was against policy or not.

An investigation into the stabbing is ongoing at this time.
