State Representative Don Haggar is resigning his seat in the South Dakota House of Representatives to accept a new position as a director of a political organization.

As of July 10 Haggar will be the state director of Americans for Prosperity, working with issues Haggar says he is passionate about.

"It's an organization that supports limited government, works against over-regulation by government agencies, and works against over taxation of people, and those are values and themes that have defined my time in the legislature."

According to a statement from Governor Dennis Daugaard, the Republican representative has served in the state House since 2013, and is currently the body’s Speaker Pro Tempore.

“Don Haggar has worked hard on behalf of his constituents and our state, and I am sorry to see him leave the Legislature,” said Gov. Daugaard. “I wish him well in the future.”

Haggar’s resignation is effective immediately. Daugaard is asking the public to nominate candidates to fill the position, which should be appointed by the end of the summer.

Haggar represented District 10, which includes Brandon, Corson, Renner and a portion of northeast Sioux Falls.
