You've probably seen them at most parties, concerts, and raves. Glowsticks! They come in all different colors, shapes and sizes.

How have these tubes of light become so popular? Who created them? Well you can thank the United States Navy!

The story goes that back in the mid 60's a chemist named Herb Richter tried to figure out a way how the military can operate at night. After more than a decade trying to craft the design, he finally came up with the glowstick. A self-contained, short-term light-source.

So the next time you are at a party or a concert, and you bust out some glowsticks, make sure you thank the U.S. Navy. For a more thorough details on glowsticks, CNNTech takes a look at the transition.
