Loretta Lynn has had a tough period of late, health-wise, having suffered a stroke in 2017 followed by a fall at her home in early 2018 that broke her hip. However, after a difficult recovery, the singer is back and in good form, ready to continue working — she released her latest album, Wouldn't It Be Great, on Sept. 28. Lynn opened up to Today's Jenna Bush Hager Thursday (Oct. 4) about her journey to health.

"I feel great," the legend says, adding, "I feel so good that I'm ashamed to even say I feel so good!"

The 86-year-old also opens up about her lengthy career, noting a particular pride in her songwriting. She tells Hager writing is more important to her than performing, "Because that's my life," she explains. "I write about my life."

"I just learned that I'm the only girl singer who wrote all her songs, and recorded them," the legend adds. "I'm real proud of that."

Lynn also talks about how "making it" as a superstar was important to her because it allowed her to provide for her family. "My kids ... my family. That's what I'm grateful for," she notes, when asked what means the most to her overall.

Loretta's Most Controversial Songs

She relates that her signature composition, "Coal Miner's Daughter," was her definitive moment of success, and that she wishes that her father — the inspiration for the song, who died before it was recorded — could have heard it.

"I would have given anything in the world if he'd been here when I recorded 'Coal Miner's Daughter,'" she muses. "But I think he hears me, and one day I will sing it to him."

Lynn, a self-taught guitarist, even sat down and showed Hager how to play a few chords, as well as treated her to a few a cappella stanzas of "Coal Miner's Daughter," which dazzled the Today crew.

Lynn is scheduled to appear in person to receive CMT's Artist of a Lifetime award on Oct. 17 during CMT's 2018 Artists of the Year event.
