Here’s the Best Time to See Fall Colors in Iowa this Year
Fall is my favorite time of year. The temperatures cool down. Football is back. We get to enjoy fall festivals, Halloween, apple orchards, and more! But among the best parts of fall have to be the colors! While the leaves change color every year in Iowa, experts say this might be a fall to remember!
What Causes the Leaves to Be Different Colors?
Accuweather reports that the weather conditions leading up to fall play a big role in just how vibrant those colors will get, and when they will reach their peak. Experts say that a colorful, vibrant fall comes down to three key factors.
- A healthy growing season. Steady rainfall in spring and summer helps the trees enter fall with little or no stress.
- Cool nights and sunny days. Cool evenings without frost help trap sugars inside the leaves, which lead to purples and reds in the fall.
- No Disruptions. Drought, wind, heavy rains, insects, and an early frost can make colors dull and lead to a shorter season.
