According to a South Dakota press release, South Dakota pioneered the nation’s first statewide traveler information telephone service in 1996. The free service provides real-time travel information 24/7, including road conditions, closures, construction, incidents, and weather forecasts.

SD511.org was a valuable asset this past winter as travelers faced blizzards that led to many different road closures. Weather information is vital during severe weather and the SDDOT 511 mobile app is popular on both iOS and Android platforms.

SD511 IMPACT

  • 25 million https://sd511.org website user engagements
  • Over four million phone calls to 511 South Dakota
  • Seven million SDDOT 511 mobile app user engagements
  • 325 thousand SDDOT 511 mobile app downloads
  • Three million My511SD alerts via email or text message

This summer the South Dakota Department of Transportation will keep travelers on top of construction work zones as well as any traffic incidents.
