Beware: Surge In Phishing Scams Targeting Unpaid Toll Violations Hits Sioux Falls
Everyone in our daily lunch group has received a text alerting them that they have an unpaid toll violation. This is most likely a scam.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) advises you NOT to open the link because there is a very good chance that this is a phishing scam attempting to separate you from your hard-earned money.
"You get a text out of the blue that says you have unpaid tolls and need to pay immediately. The scammy text might show a dollar amount for how much you supposedly owe and include a link that takes you to a page to enter your bank or credit card info — but it’s a phishing scam. Not only is the scammer trying to steal your money, but if you click the link, they could get your personal info (like your driver’s license number) — and even steal your identity." ~ Federal Communications Commission
I personally have received an official-looking letter in the mail alerting me that I ran tolls in Colorado and need to pay up. I haven't been in Colorado in 4 years so I knew something was up. I called the number in the letter and a person answered. It sounded like I woke him from a nap. I asked him to give me the plate number that was "caught on camera" busting a toll. He could not give me an answer or even what state the plate was issued in. I told him this is a scam and would be contacting the State Attorney's Office and he hung up.
The scammers are getting crafty. Protect yourself and your money by immediately deleting unwanted or suspicious texts.
