New Artworks Celebrate South Dakota’s Culture In Public Spaces
A state-sponsored collection showcasing the works of South Dakota artists is growing again.
New Additions
The South Dakota Arts Council recently purchased 10 new pieces for the state’s public art collection through the Art for State Buildings program.
The Criteria for Artwork
The works were selected by a five-member advisory committee to the council, which reviewed 80 purchase proposals from 65 different artists and based its decisions on:
- Quality of the work
- Relevance to the artist’s career
- Relevance to South Dakota environment, history, heritage, or culture
- Professional experience of the artist
- Durability and safety (required for public artworks and viewers)

The Program's Backstory
The program, which now has 135 pieces, was made possible with the 2007 passage of State Statute 1-22-10, which stipulates that state buildings should include works of art for public display.

The South Dakota Arts Council manages the collection and the program. Purchase proposals are accepted on an annual basis.
