Sioux Falls Sees Double-Digit Increase in This Crime Stat So Far in 2023
Through the first eight months of 2023, Sioux Falls is a more violent place to live.
The Sioux Falls Police Department has released the crime numbers from January to August of this year and while the numbers in most major categories are holding steady, there was a double-digit increase in one area.
The report shows that aggravated assaults are up 14 percent from last year. Aggravated assaults are defined as crimes where either a weapon was used or threatened, or an assault happened that resulted in serious injury.
In 2023, there have been 1,050 aggravated assaults in the city, which is 87 more than this time last year.
Also up so far in 2023 is the number of stolen vehicles in Sioux Falls. Authorities say the majority of those thefts were vehicles that had the keys left inside. In all, there have been 429 stolen vehicles reported, compared to 375 last January - August.
The Sioux Falls Police Department has been busy in 2023, responding to a total of 86,526 calls.
