With just a few days left in 2002, traffic deaths are down on Iowa roadways.

Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) data shows 335 fatalities so far this year, which is 13 fewer than a year ago.

That's the good news.

The bad news? It's the second-highest total in the Hawkeye State in the last six years.

In 2022, the deadliest month on Iowa roads was July with 41 fatalities. January saw the fewest deaths with 18 fatalities.

Deaths on rural roads (232) accounted for more than 69 percent of the fatalities.

The DOT says nearly half of the fatalities (46%) in 2022 were not wearing seatbelts.

A total of 232 crashes have taken place in rural Iowa, far more than urban, ATV/UTV, pedestrian, bicycle, and motorcycle-type crashes combined.
