Dogs Get Two Sioux Falls City Pools To Themselves Later This Month
The city of Sioux Falls recently found itself in some pretty deep water when it announced plans to close the city’s public swimming pools on Sunday, August 9.
That decision didn’t exactly make a huge splash with some residents. People weren’t ready to put away the swimsuits, pool noodles and sunscreen just yet, and the pushback was enough to convince the city to rethink the original schedule. As a result, most Sioux Falls public pools will stay open one additional week, giving swimmers a few more opportunities to squeeze every last drop of summer out of the season.
Four of the city’s six public pools will now remain open through Sunday, August 16. And all of the city-operated splash pads will remain open after the outdoor pools close, with adjusted schedules and seasonal closing dates. A couple of splash pads will stay open as late as mid-September.
Once the final human swimmers are finished for the season, a couple of Sioux Falls pools will be handing over the water to a very different kind of swimmer.
These swimmers are extremely hairy and have four legs. That’s right, the dogs are taking over.
According to our friends at Pigeon 605, the annual "Swimming Gone to the Dogs" events are returning to Sioux Falls this month, allowing your four-legged family members to enjoy one final splash before the pools close for good.
There will be two chances for your pooch to make a splash.
The first event is scheduled for Tuesday, August 11, at Terrace Park Family Aquatic Center, located at 1100 West Fourth Street. The second will take place on Tuesday, August 18, at Laurel Oak Family Aquatic Center, located at 3401 East 49th Street.
Both events run from 5:30 to 7:00 PM.
So, what exactly happens when the swimming pool officially goes to the dogs?
Well, it’s pretty much exactly what it sounds like. Well-behaved, family-friendly dogs can take a dip in the city pool and enjoy some off-leash fun with their fellow canine companions.
And to be honest, some dogs are probably going to be far more excited about this than their humans ever will.
There are a few rules that you and your hounds must follow. Owners can bring up to two dogs, and you must stay with your pets during the event. Dogs also need to be current on their vaccinations and able to follow the event’s off-leash rules.
The best part? It’s completely free, and there’s no registration required.
So, tell Fido to leave his wallet, credit card, and piggy bank at home. This one won’t cost him a single dog biscuit.

Just remember to bring a towel. Because if there’s one thing we know about dogs and water, once they're done swimming, they will immediately start shaking about 14 gallons of water in your direction, and you'll be glad you have a towel along.
