An iconic building in downtown Sioux Falls has, as Miley Cyrus would put it, survived "The Wrecking Ball!"

The Sioux Falls Coliseum is going to live to see another day.

As we all know, Sioux Falls is rapidly growing; as a result, the city needs more space. To help solve the problem, a plan was being floated around that would have called for the demolition of the Coliseum building at 515 North Main to make way for additional administrative space for the city.

According to Dakota News Now, a consulting firm was hired by the city back in April to help map out future growth. The firm recommended demolishing the Coliseum to make room for additional administrative office space for Minnehaha County officials. With the county facing a growing need for workspace, the idea wasn’t completely out of left field, but it didn’t exactly sit well with many locals either.

Once the possibility became public, Sioux Falls residents made their voices heard. And if there’s one thing this town does well, besides packing the Levitt lawn on a summer night is rallying around places and causes that matter.

As Dakota News Now reports, city officials listened. Instead of moving forward with demolition plans for the historic Coliseum building, the city has opted for a different solution. Additional office space has already been secured in the short term, buying leaders more time to figure out a long-range plan that doesn’t involve tearing down a recognizable piece of downtown.

Looking ahead, Sioux Falls is considering expanding upward rather than outward. One idea currently on the table involves potentially adding floors to the County Administration Building within the next five years to accommodate continued growth.

For now, the Coliseum will remain part of the downtown landscape.

A detailed report outlining future expansion plans is expected to be released within the next one to two weeks, giving residents a clearer picture of what’s next for downtown Sioux Falls development.

5 Things South Dakota Gave the World

South Dakota may not get much respect. We get a blizzard and it's a footnote on the national scene, but if Florida gets a bit chilly it's breaking news. But, maybe it's fine to be forgotten about. We kind of like being left alone on our quiet piece of the plains.

South Dakota has given a lot to the world though. Not just giant mountain carvings and settings for HBO shows, but awesome things that the rest of the world should thank us for.
