Toyota has issued a significant safety recall affecting more than 550,000 vehicles, citing a defect that could put passengers at serious risk in the event of a collision.

The recall, officially filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on March 5, centers on a seat back locking failure in second-row seats.

According to the agency, the second-row seat backs may fail to lock into position during adjustment, which is a flaw that could leave rear passengers improperly restrained during a high-speed crash.

Which Vehicles Are Affected?

Approximately 550,000 vehicles are included in this recall. The affected models are:

  • 2021–2024 Toyota Highlander
  • 2021–2024 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

The official recall numbers are 26TB06 and 26TA06.

What Should Owners Do?

Toyota owners with affected vehicles should contact their local Toyota dealership to schedule a free inspection and repair.

Owners can also visit NHTSA.gov or call Toyota's customer service line to confirm whether their specific vehicle is included using their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

NHTSA advises that until the issue is resolved, passengers seated in the second row should take extra precautions, as an unlocked seat back significantly reduces crash protection.
